15 April 2025 Ammodo Science Award for Marvin Tanenbaum Back to news Group leader Marvin Tanenbaum has received an Ammodo Science Award for fundamental research. The award, presented every two years to eight researchers across different science domains, includes a prize of 350,000 euros. Tanenbaum will use this to continue his work on gene expression and viral infections, using advanced technologies developed by his group. Genetic processes live on screen Tanenbaum, who is not only group leader at the Hubrecht Institute, but also at Oncode Institute, and Professor at TU Delft, developed the groundbreaking ‘SunTag’ technology. Using this technique, individual dynamic biomolecules in living cells can be visualized by marking them with fluorescent proteins. This revolutionary technology is now used by laboratories worldwide. Among other things, this method revealed that most genes can produce different protein variants, something that was long thought to be impossible. He also developed the VIRIM technology, which allowed his group to show how viral genes are switched on and off during an infection – a breakthrough that helps solve decades-old questions about viral infections. Innovative research The laureates were selected by advisory committees made up of renowned scientists. “Every year, it is both a thrill and a pleasure to see which scientists our advisory committees put forward for the Ammodo Science Awards,” says Juliette de Wijkerslooth, General Director of Ammodo. “Once again, we are inspired by the innovative research of this year’s laureates, each of whom, in their own way, advances our collective knowledge.” About the Ammodo Science Award Ammodo stimulates the development of art, science and architecture. Every two years, Ammodo presents the Ammodo Science Award for fundamental research to eight outstanding mid-career scientists conducting fundamental research. The Award is awarded for all four scientific domains: Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Biomedical Sciences. Marvin Tanenbaum is group leader at the Hubrecht Institute, professor of Gene Expression Dynamics at TU Delft and Investigator at Oncode Institute.
