Description of the project
The Tanenbaum lab studies how cells and viruses control gene expression at the level of mRNA regulation. We develop and apply advanced microscopy approaches that allow us to visualize the translation and regulation of individual mRNA molecules in living cells. Our work combines quantitative live‑cell imaging, molecular biology, and genetic engineering to uncover the molecular mechanisms that control gene expression in human cells and during RNA virus infection. Using these approaches, we aim to understand how gene expression dynamics shape cellular behavior and disease processes.
We are looking for a motivated and organized lab manager to support our research program. The position combines experimental work with laboratory organization and management. The successful candidate will work closely with members of the Tanenbaum lab and collaborate with other research groups and facilities at the Hubrecht Institute.
Responsibilities The lab manager will support the daily operation of the laboratory and contribute to research projects. Tasks will include:
– Performing molecular biology and cell culture experiments – Supporting live‑cell microscopy experiments, sample preparation and analysis – Assisting with cloning, cell line generation, and assay development – General laboratory organization (ordering, inventory, equipment coordination) – Helping maintain laboratory protocols and documentation – Supporting lab members with experimental setup and troubleshooting
Requirements We are looking for a motivated and reliable technician with an HLO background and interest in molecular and cell biology.
Preferred qualifications:
– BSc/MSc degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Life Sciences, or related field – Experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g. cloning, PCR, DNA/RNA work) – Experience with mammalian cell culture – Fluorescence analysis methods, including microscopy and FACS – Genome modification using CRISPR – Strong organizational skills and interest in lab management – Ability to work independently as well as in a team – Proactive attitude and good independent problem‑solving skills – Excellent communication skills in English (working language of the institute)

About the Hubrecht Institute The Hubrecht Institute is a research institute focused on molecular and developmental biology. Because of the dynamic character of the research, the institute has a variable number of research groups, around 20, that do fundamental, multidisciplinary research on healthy and diseased cells, tissues and organisms. The Hubrecht Institute is a research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), situated on Utrecht Science Park. Since 2008, the institute is affiliated with the UMC Utrecht, advancing the translation of research to the clinic. The Hubrecht Institute has a partnership with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). For more information, visit www.hubrecht.eu.
Terms of employment Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is € 3.382 and the maximum salary is € 4.484 gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale 8 cao Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW).
