Ten years Friends of the Hubrecht Institute

Back to news

The Foundation Friends of the Hubrecht Institute celebrates its ten-year anniversary. Already for a decade, the Friends support the research at the Hubrecht Institute in the broadest sense of the word. The anniversary is celebrated today with a symposium and a dinner, during which Jan van Zanen, mayor of Utrecht, together with Hubrecht Institute director Alexander van Oudenaarden, hands out the Honorary Hubrecht Fellowship to Gerard van Odijk, Hans Clevers and Paul Bouter. The annual Postdoc Friends Award go to Jarno Drost, Federico Tessadori and Peter Krijger.

The Foundation Friends of the Hubrecht Institute aims to support research at the Hubrecht Institute. The foundation does this by raising funds for research, as well as by organizing events to raise awareness for the Hubrecht Institute. Also, new equipment is funded, such as a laboratory robot that moves more quickly and accurately than human hands. This pipetting robot has been purchased with a crowdfunding campaign that was launched by the Friends.

The Foundation does not only set up fundraising campaigns, but also organizes events that contribute to the awareness of the institute. A quarterly event is the Hubrecht College, during which Hubrecht scientists present the importance of their research to a wide audience. Like a traditional lecture, the speaker above all intends to interact with the audience: guests can ask questions and the speaker will also ask questions to the audience.

To thank patrons for their contribution, the Foundation Friends of the Hubrecht Institute organizes guided tours on a regular basis. Companies or individuals that have donated to the research at the Hubrecht are welcome at the institute to visit the lab and have a drink with the scientists.

Today, the Friends themselves are in the limelight. Their ten-year anniversary is celebrated with a symposium, featuring Hubrecht researchers Jeroen den Hertog and Hans Clevers. The evening continues with a dinner brought by Jacob Jan Boerma, chef de cuisine of three-star restaurant De Leest, Vaassen, and is adorned with, among others, speeches of Toon Gerbrands, general director of soccer club PSV, and Watske Smit, internist in the Jeroen Bosch Hospital and selected as best tutor in the Netherlands.

On this festive day, Jan van Zanen, mayor of Utrecht, and Alexander van Oudenaarden, director of the Hubrecht Institute, award the Honorary Hubrecht Fellowship to Gerard van Odijk, Hans Clevers and Paul Bouter as an acknowledgement for their services to the Friends. Also, annually, the Friends hand the dr. Patrick Hanlo Awards to the best postdocs of the Hubrecht Institute. This year, the honors go to Jarno Drost (Clevers group), Federico Tessadori (Bakkers group) and Peter Krijger (de Laat group).
