A day full of curiosity: looking back on our 110-year anniversary

The day was filled with opportunities to explore science. Visitors of all ages enthusiastically took part in hands-on experiences, extracting their own DNA, tuning in to RadioCellFM! and becoming a virus that infects a cell. Visitors got a glimpse behind the scenes of the institute as they explored the laboratories, where they could have a go at pipetting themselves, see our pipetting robots in action, and look at zebrafish embryos under the microscope.

Thanks to several great collaborations, there was plenty to do beyond our own labs as well. Wim van Egmond helped visitors build their own Antoni van Leeuwenhoek microscope, and NEMO brought their interactive Holland’s Next Embryo Model show, in which visitor discussed their questions, concerns and ideas about embryo models. A lot of interesting perspectives were shared.

Inside, there was a stage where visitors could enjoy short talks about the remarkable axolotl, research on embryo implantation, a day in the life of a PhD student, heart regeneration, and more. Both adults and children were enthusiastic, keen to learn and they asked many questions. The fact or fiction game on stage was especially interactive. Science communicator Anna Gimbrère, who hosted our open day, ensured fun and smooth transitions between the talks. She even arranged a special meeting between Geert Kops, our director, and Ambrosius Hubrecht, whom our institute is named after!

The atmosphere throughout the day was warm and welcoming. Visitors unanimously commented on the friendly and enthusiastic interactions with our volunteers. Overall, we look back on a day full of curiosity, dialogue and engagement. It was a great success!
