Niels Geijsen

Niels Geijsen received his PhD from Utrecht University in The Netherlands in 2000 studying cytokine signaling in the hematopoietic system. He completed his post-doctoral training in the lab of Dr. George Daley at MIT and the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research where he pioneerd a method for the in vitro generation of germ cells from embryonic stem cells. Dr. Geijsen’s research focuses on understanding the biology of pluripotent stem cells and developing new stem-cell based tools to explore human development and oncogenic transformation.

Geijsen: Pluripotent stem cells in development and disease

Pluripotent stem cells can divide almost indefinitely and have the unique ability to give rise to every cell type in our body. For this reason, they are the most versatile source of stem cells for (drug) research and transplantation therapy. The Geijsen group is developing novel stem cell-based methods to study human development and disease and to develop assays for drug-screening, pathway identification and toxicology assessments.
