Hans Clevers, group leader at the Hubrecht Institute, received the Grand Cross of Merit with Star, a high German order. He was given the decoration because of his scientific achievements in the field of stem cell research.
The German consul in The Netherlands, Petra Speyrer, awarded Hans Clevers the ‘Großes Verdienstkreuz mit Stern’ of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in the name of the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. She praised Clevers because of his exceptional achievements in medical science, mainly the use of organoids.
The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany is the highest tribute the Federal Republic of Germany can pay to individuals for services to the nation. The Order may be awarded to Germans as well as foreigners for achievements in the political, economic, social or intellectual realm and for all kinds of outstanding services to the nation. The award is a red cross with a golden medallion, decorated with a black eagle – the heraldic animal of Germany.
Prof. dr. Hans Clevers is group leader at the Hubrecht Institute (KNAW), Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University Medical Center Utrecht and Utrecht University and Scientific Director of the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology.
