Marcel Tijsterman studied chemistry at the Leiden University, specializing in molecular genetics. He received his PhD from the Leiden University in 1999 studying DNA repair in the model organism S. cerevisiae (groups of Piet van de Putte and Jaap Brouwer). For his postdoctoral work he joined Ronald Plasterk's lab at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), which moved to the Hubrecht Institute in Utrecht in 2000. Subject of study was the mechanism of RNAi in the nematode C. elegans. From ~2004 (to 2006 as project leader and from 2007 onwards as principal investigator/group leader) his work focused on research on genomic instability and DNA damage responses. In the summer of 2009, he will move his lab to the department of Toxicogenetics of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). His group received funding from ZonMw (Vidi grant); KWF; Netherlands genomic initiative (NGI-Horizon); the EU (ERC Starting grant) and the cancer genomic center (CGC).
As per 1 June 2009 Marcel Tijsterman has been appointed at the Department of Toxicogenetics of the Leiden University Medical Center.
